Understanding the Strategic Environment

This course analyzes how global political and economic trends shape contemporary national security policy. Students examine U.S. strategic interests across Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and the Middle East, with particular attention to the policy dimensions of U.S.–China competition.

The course addresses evolving challenges—including the rise of middle powers, strains on the international rules-based order, technological transformation, and transnational threats such as climate change and pandemics. By integrating regional analysis with policy frameworks, students develop the ability to evaluate strategic environments and assess implications for defense planning, diplomacy, and broader policy decision making.
