Understanding Nuclear Forces

This course introduces the history, technical foundations, and strategic dynamics of nuclear weapons and deterrence, examining their evolving role in national security policy. Students analyze the development of nuclear arsenals, modernization efforts, and emerging threats posed by Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. The course integrates technical understanding of weapon effects with policy analysis on employment strategies, deterrence theory, and future force requirements. Through interactive discussions and a short policy paper, students apply analytical frameworks to assess nuclear policy options and strategic challenges in a changing global security environment.
