Introduction to Qualitative Methods

This course introduces the major approaches within qualitative research and their relevance for public policy analysis. Students examine the theoretical foundations, epistemological assumptions, and practical applications of methods such as interviews, focus groups, case studies, ethnography, and content analysis. Attention is given to research design choices, data collection and interpretation, and the ethical considerations inherent in qualitative inquiry. Through guided exercises and development of a hypothetical dissertation proposal, students learn to formulate qualitative research questions and design studies that generate rich contextual insights for policy evaluation and decision making.
