China’s National Security and Military Modernization

This course examines China’s evolving national security strategy and the modernization of its military forces. Students analyze factors informing China’s approach to its national security, and assess how its evolving national security concept shapes regional and global security dynamics. Key topics include the People’s Liberation Army’s organizational reforms, strategic priorities, and advancements in critical warfighting domains.

The course also examines China’s linked foreign and security policy objectives and competition with the United States. By the end, students gain insight into China’s approach to security and the implications of its military transformation for U.S. and ally/partner national security interests.
