Perspectives on Emerging Technology and Risk

This course examines how risks associated with machine learning and other computational systems can be measured, interpreted, and managed to support responsible public policy. Through both conceptual and applied work, students will learn to evaluate ethical and policy risks not only as abstract concerns, but as concrete, measurable challenges.

Special attention will be given to predictive analytics, computer vision, and large language models—tools increasingly used in high-stakes decision-making contexts such as criminal justice, healthcare, and education. The course also introduces key debates in AI safety and governance, including how to anticipate long-term risks, manage uncertainty, and balance innovation with precaution in rapidly evolving technological landscapes.
